What is homeopathy?

Homeopathy is a system of medicine that uses natural remedies to stimulate the body’s own self-healing powers. As a holistic medicine it views symptoms of the body and mind as a totality. Similar to acupuncture and many other holistic medicines, homeopathy is founded on the belief that we all possess a unique energy or life force (prana, chi) that governs our body and mind as a whole. Homeopathy recognizes that all symptoms of ill-health are expressions of disharmony within the whole person, and so the focus is on the patient who needs treatment rather than on the disease.

The principle of “like cures like” explains that a substance, which has the power to cause certain symptoms in a healthy person, will heal those same symptoms in a person who is ill.

A state of health can be brought back into balance when given the right stimulus. In homeopathy, this means prescribing a remedy whose symptom picture is most similar to the patient’s own symptoms. In this way the patient receives the remedy from nature which mirrors the pattern of his own physical and emotional symptoms, and the more similar the remedy, the greater the healing that may occur.

Successful treatment will not only reduce or remove symptoms, but will strengthen the person and create a general feeling of well-being, and so there will be less susceptibility to common ailments.

Homeopathy is safe and effective for the whole family, and can be used to stimulate and maintain health in people of all ages, from infancy, during pregnancy, and through to old age.

Consultation – What to expect?

The first consultation is usually 2 hours long. During this time you will be asked to relate your illness in detail and describe how it affects you. Physical and emotional stressors in your life will be explored, as well as any other aspects of your life that could guide your homeopath to understand your unique individuality. Each person is unique--it is this unique quality that defines you as an individual, and that your homeopath endeavours to understand during the interview. After the consultation, your homeopath will then study your case in order to match your symptom picture as closely as possible to a remedy with a similar symptom picture.

Follow up consultations are usually booked 6-8 weeks after the initial consultation. These appointments are 45 minutes to an hour long. At this time your homeopath will determine the how effectively the remedy has acted within you, and assess whether to repeat or to change the remedy according to the symptoms you are now feeling.
